Angels and Sons of God

August 29, 2007

God is a Spirit and must be worshipped in spirit and truth. God is neither male nor female, but called “Father” for several reasons. He has an only begotten Son named Jesus. God is the Father to Jesus via the miracle of the Holy Ghost creating Jesus in the womb of Mary. God is the Father of all men who receive the breath of life directly from him. He breathed his spirit into Adam and Adam became a living soul. God, through Jesus, breathes the breath of life (Holy Ghost) into each man who accepts the Word of God into his soul.

Adam is called a son of God. Jesus is the only begotten Son of God. All “born again” (Christians) are sons of God. These are the only ones in the Bible called the sons of God.

Angels are extensions of God (ministering spirits). They appear as males when presenting a particular announcement from God, because they are created beings specifically to perform his commands and represent an omnipotent God. No angel is referenced as a “son of God”. Angels do not appear as a female when presenting messages from God. Females are in subjection to males as the church (Bride) is in subjection to Christ, and who is also omnipotent. An angel might appear as a child, female, or male when appearing incognito to a human.

Although, angels may temporarily take on human form, they never become human and never have sexual characteristics (Matthew 22:29-30).

Genesis 2:7, 18 7And the LORD God formed a man of the dust of the ground, breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. 18The LORD God said, it is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help-meet. (Adam became a son of God through the breath of life from God.)

Genesis 2:21-25 21The LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22The rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 23Adam said, this is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. 25They were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

While Adam and Eve were still undefiled and pure, God told Adam and Eve their children should leave them and form their own families. Since Adam and Eve had no father and mother, these instructions were for their children.

Genesis 1:27-28 27So God created man (Adam) in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28God blessed them, and God said unto them, be fruitful, multiply, and replenish the earth.

God told Adam and Eve to have children. This was before they had sinned and lost their spiritual soul. This evokes the possibility of children in the Garden of Eden before Adam and Eve were kicked out. If there were children in the Garden, they would not have been affected by the sin of Adam. They could remain in the Garden in their perfect state.

God placed Cherubims and a flaming sword at the entrance of the Garden of Eden to keep anyone from re-entering. There is nothing stating others could not leave if they so desired. Once a person willingly left the Garden, they would be tainted by the sins of the world and lose their spiritual souls as did Adam and Eve. We know they could not re-enter the Garden once they left. They could no longer eat of the Tree of Life and live forever, since the Cherubims and flaming swords would not allow re-entry.

Genesis 6:1-7 1It came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. 3The LORD said, my spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. 5GOD saw the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6It repented the LORD he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. 7Tthe LORD said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, beast, the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repents me that I have made them”.

Some contend the sons of God were angels, but the Bible does not say this. Some say they were children of Seth, but the Bible does not state this. We can only guess the meaning of this passage of scripture. I am not adamant in saying the following possibility is true, but it has as much validity as saying the sons of God were the children of Seth. Neither has the Bible called an angel a son of God.

A possibility: The above passage (Genesis 6:1-7) is preceded immediately by Adam and Eve being kicked out of the Garden. This eviction is followed by naming many of those born to Adam and his descendents outside the Garden. Men began to multiply rapidly upon the face of the earth. When Adam and Eve were kicked out of the Garden, they had just lost their spiritual life from God, but were still perfect specimens in their flesh and still had brilliant minds since they were fresh out of Paradise.

As their descendents were born, and the effects of sin took its toll on their minds and bodies, each generation degraded in both mind and body. The law of entropy states that once anything becomes tainted with impurities, it progressively deteriorates. It will always be in a state of chaos and degradation and matters only become worse over time.

Each generation of children from Adam and Eve, outside the Garden, became more and more wicked. In the Garden, Adam and Eve probably were clothed with an aura of righteousness. When they sinned, this aura could have immediately collapsed and they knew they were naked. I will assume for my possible solution, children, still in the Garden, were clothed with this aura of righteousness.

If there were any children in the Garden of Eden, they would still be pure, have perfect minds, and perfect bodies. They still had the choice of trusting God and remaining eternally pure, or could choose to follow Adam and Eve’s example and desire to be their own god. Since these children were still in perfection, they would still be sons of God.

The women in the Garden may have been clothed with an aura of righteousness. Let’s say the men could see the promiscuous lustful lure of the women outside the Garden. It is a possibility; the grass appeared greener on the other side of the fence, and many sons of God saw the daughters of men and left the Garden to take them as wives.

If this happened, men leaving the Garden would be in perfect physical shape with perfect minds. They could possibly be giants compared to the descendents already in the sin tainted world. They would be smarter than the descendents born into the sin tainted world. Their offspring could be giants, have greater knowledge, and become more renowned in their trade.

Reading the passage above carefully, you see these marriages began to take place and wickedness became great upon the face of the earth. God decided to flood the world and save only Noah and his family from the flood. If the children from the Garden were leaving in hordes to enter a tainted world of sin, I can see God stopping the whole process and deciding to implement his plan of grace and faith. It was obvious man was not pleasing God at this time.

Genesis 3:16, 20-21 16Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shall bring forth children; thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. 20Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. 21Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

God did not say Eve would begin having children once she was banned from the Garden, but her sorrow and conception problems would be multiplied while producing children outside the Garden.

Luke 3:38 Enos was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God. (This passage tells us that Adam was a son of God prior to his fall. However, he lost the breath of life from God and must be born again by the resurrection of Christ to receive a new breath of life from God.)

1 John 3:1-2 1Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knows us not, because it knew him not. 2Beloved, we are now the sons of God and we do not yet know what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. (Born again believers are called sons of God)

Romans 8:14-19 14As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15Ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17If children, then heirs; heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him; we may be also glorified together. 18I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19The earnest expectation of the creature waits for the manifestation of the sons of God.

Job 1:6-7 6Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. 7The LORD said unto Satan, Whence come thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, from going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

Some use this passage to say Satan was called a son of God. It never made that statement. It does not say the sons of God are angels. Many assume this because Satan was found among the sons of God. The sons of God came before the Lord and Satan appeared among them. God then asked Satan why he was there! Satan is the accuser of the brethren before God, and Jesus is the Advocate. These sons of God could possibly be some of those still in Paradise or some who have died in faith and are present with God.

John 1:12-13 12As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Philippians 2:13-15 13It is God which works in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. 14Do all things without murmurings and disputing: 15That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world.

Job 38:6-7 6Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner stone thereof; 7When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? (Many say these are angels, but there is nothing declaring these sons of God are angels.)

Matthew 22:28-30 28Therefore in the resurrection whose wife is she of the seven, for they all had her. 29Jesus answered and said unto them, ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, or the power of God. 30In the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

Jesus tells us that angels are sexless and do not procreate. Procreation and sex are for this time period on earth of mankind. This indicates mankind will not procreate in heaven.

Luke 20:34-36 34Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: 35They which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: 36Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God. (The same information from Luke)

Mark 12:24-25 24Jesus answering said unto them, do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? 25When they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven. (The same information from Mark)

Hebrews 1:4-7, 13-14 4Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. 5Unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? 6When he brings in the first begotten into the world, he said, and let all the angels of God worship him. 7And of the angels he said, who makes his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. 13But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thy enemies thy footstool? 14Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

The passage above states angels are below Jesus and have never been called God’s sons. The angels must worship Jesus and are the same ministers to him as to God; ministers of flame and fire.

Judges 13:20 It came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. (Angels appear to be spirits of flaming fire.)

Psalms 103:4 Who makes his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire.

Revelation 10:1 I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire.

2 Thessalonians 1:7-8 7To you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 8In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Matthew 28:2-3 2Behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, came, rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. 3His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow.

Acts 7:30 When forty years were expired; there appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

Matthew 1:20 While he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream. (Angels appear in dreams and have to be spirits to appear in a man’s mind.)

Matthew 2:13 When they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, arise, take the young child, his mother, flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

Revelations 18:1 After these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.

Even though angels appeared as men, they were always recognized as angels. God knew the best way for angels to appear as to be less frightful to humankind. In the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, both Abraham and Lot recognized the men were angels.

Yes, they formed as men because they were sent to Sodom and Gomorrah to see if the “cries of the wickedness of that city” was true. They posed as men to test the wickedness of the homosexuals of the two cities.

Genesis 19:1 There came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: Lot seeing the angels rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground.

Genesis 19:15 When the morning arose, the angels hastened Lot, saying, arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

Revelation 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou saw in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou saw are the seven churches. (The seven stars and seven candlesticks are the seven spirits of the seven church ages.)

Psalms 103:20-21 20Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. 21Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure. (Angels created as ministering spirits for God’s assignments.)

Angels often change appearance and take a form to us as shown below. The first verse below tells us we sometime entertain angels without knowing it. Since they sometimes appear incognito to us, it is possible they might take the appearance of a woman or child.

Hebrews 13:2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

2 Corinthians 11:14-15 14And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

John 1:51 He said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. (Angels ascended and descended directly on Jesus as ministering spirits, not as men)
