Jesus is “I AM”

By ahsoisee

I have listed all the times Jesus used the words “I am”. Most Christians are aware that God identified himself to Moses in the Old Testament as “I am”. Jesus also identified himself in the New Testament as God and claimed to be “I am”. I know this constitutes a lot of scripture, but some might like to copy and paste all of these verses for future reference.

God identified himself as “I Am”. The phrase or name “I Am” has the same characteristics as the identity of the phrase “God Is”. For my study of this phrase (name), I used both the phrases, “I Am” and “God Is” interchangeably, and it proved quite interesting to me. Many times “I Am” and “God Is” appeared to say the same thing.

We start with God and his identification of himself.

Exodus 3:14 And God said unto Moses, “I AM THAT I AM” said, Thus shall thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

Acts 7:30-32 30And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush. 31When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him, 32Saying, “I AM” the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

Luke 3:22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee “I am” well pleased.

Matthew 17:5 While he yet spoke, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, this is my beloved Son, in whom “I am” well pleased; hear ye him.

Matthew 22:31-32 31But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, “I am” the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?

The following verses are in no particular order, but it is amazing how many times Jesus used the words “I am”. It is also interesting to note the word “he”, in italics after the words “I am”, is not in the original text. The italicized words were added by the translators from the original texts to today’s Bible. In the verse below, Jesus really said “I am” instead of “I am he”.

John 18:4-8 4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, whom seek you? 5They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said unto them, “I am” he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. 6As soon then as he had said unto them, “I am” he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. 7Then asked he them again, whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. 8Jesus answered, I have told you that “I am” he: If therefore ye seek me, let these go their way.

John 18:37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, as you said that “I am” a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause I came into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice.
